The OTF (Out The Front) style switchblade is a knife that shoots the blade straight out the front of the handle and locks it into place. Additionally, when you pull back on the thumb switch, the blade will shoot back into the handle to conceal it. The mechanism that allows this knife to operate this way is quite amazing and I set out to create and design and completely wooden version that would function the same way. After much trial and error, I finally arrived at a working model… the Fisher’s Switchblade!
This set of instructions and stencils will walk you through creating all the necessary pieces to make the switchblade. It’s important to note that in this project, precision is key. It won’t take much deviation from the proper shapes for the mechanism to cease to function so try to be as accurate as possible. On the same note, if the knife isn’t working, it’ll probably only take minor adjustments to get it to function correctly provided that the pieces are close to the right shape.
